Melatonin
Melatonin is another drug that can have a sympatholytic effect, inhibiting aspects of the sympathetic nervous system, helping individuals with hyperadrenergic forms of POTS.
It has been shown to reduce the levels of norepinephrine in individuals when standing (Green et al., 2014).
Given the significant sleep difficulties many individuals with POTS can have, in addition to added sleep difficulties some may have when taking beta-blockers, researchers have wanted to test how well melatonin would work for individuals in our community if taken at night (Green et al., 2014).
We will update this section as that research becomes available.
